When you think about saving money on moving, your first instinct might be to call all of your friends and family to help rather than hiring a moving company. But what if they're all busy, or what if you don't have a lot of friends nearby to help? Luckily for you, there are ways to save on your move without begging others for help.
Move on a weekday.
If you have any sort of flexibility in your schedule, try to schedule your move for the middle of the week rather than on a Saturday or a Sunday. Moving companies often charge less for mid-week moves since they have a harder time finding customers who want to move in the middle of the week. If you have to stay overnight in a hotel on your way to your new place, you'll also pay lower rates for a room mid-week than on the weekend.
Get rid of junk.
Start planning ahead, and throw away any items you don't need before it's time to move. You can donate those items that are in good shape to Salvation Army or another charity organization. If there is any furniture you think may not fit in your new place, sell it before you move rather than afterwards. Since most moving companies charge either by weight or by volume, you'll pay less for their services if you have fewer items to move.
Save your receipts.
If you're moving for job-related purposes, you should be able to deduct your moving expenses from your taxes. So, save receipts for everything moving-related, from the rental truck to the boxes. Give these receipts to your tax preparer at the end of the year, and you'll likely see your tax return increase.
Make sure you're not doubling up on insurance.
Most moving companies offer insurance to reimburse you if any of your items are damaged or lost during moving. However, some homeowner's and renter's insurance policies also offer moving protection. Check with your homeowner's or renter's insurance company to see what your policy covers. You may be able to get away without purchasing that additional insurance from the moving company, which will save you some cash.
Moving does not have to cost an arm and a leg. With the tips above, you should be able to move more affordably – and without presenting a huge hassle to your busy friends and family members.
